South Dakota Public Broadcasting is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This position will be employed by the Friends of SDPB, a 501c3 that supports the SDPB Network.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting is a well-respected, multi-media institution. SDPB is a statewide community resource producing and broadcasting intelligent, commercial-free programs and conducting valuable community outreach that educates, enlightens, and entertains. SDPB is a department of the state government operating under the Bureau of Information and Telecommunications. SDPB is South Dakota.

About “Friends”

Friends of SDPB is the 501(c)(3) fundraising and advocacy arm of South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Friends serves the roughly 13,500 SDPB member families and 250 corporate clients. Friends connects our clients and our loyal audience to SDPB and have fun doing it!

Challenging and Rewarding Work
In this position you will be responsible for the strategic fiscal management of the South Dakota Public Broadcasting network, an agency of the State of South Dakota, within the South Dakota Bureau of Information and Telecommunications, and the Friends of SPDB organization. You will be responsible for working with station leadership to build, maintain, and grow the joint organizations’ overall $13.5 million dollar budget. You will also be the primary liaison to the State of South Dakota Bureau of Finance and Management and National Educational Television Association Business Services office, who are both key collaborators in managing our budget.

Build relationships with station staff, board members, and State of South Dakota finance staff to create a financial vision for the organization’s future. We also need you to be able to explain your vision to our boards and key stakeholders.

  • Passionate for SDPB or public media, and all that the network offers
  • Resourceful –someone with “vision” who can think strategically to help SDPB and Friends of SDPB reach our goals
  • Excellent communicator – thoughtful and persuasive verbal and written communications skills. Can you create and clearly convey financial information to our internal and external stakeholders?
  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in finance or accounting; graduate degree preferred
  • Minimum five years’ experience in accounting, with a preference for working with non-for-profit organizations, governmental entities, or in public media
  • Preference of an experienced leadership role
  • Connector – a team member who isn’t afraid to pick up the phone to call a peer, manager, or client to share ideas and make something happen
  • The ability to present to our board of directors and committees of the board
  • The ability to travel if necessary
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, accounting software, and electronic spreadsheets
  • Excellent organizational skills with proven abilities with regard to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to self-manage and influence others to meet commitments
  • Ability to take responsibility and ownership for tasks and to use initiative and creativity
  • Ability to work proactively to meet deadlines
  • Commitment to excellent customer service and satisfaction
